Negative thoughts often seem impossible to control. Once they start creeping in, they have a scary way of taking over. Before you know it, your mood has changed, your stress level has increased and your day has been ruined. Believe it or not, there are ways to control negative thoughts. It’s important to remember that you have the power to choose positivity over negativity, even when it seems difficult.

Here are six habits that stop negative thinking:

1. Observe The Thought

Instead of immediately trying to rid your mind of a negative thought, take the time to observe it. Allow yourself to think about it and work through the negativity. If you can pinpoint the source of the thought – fear, anger, stress – it might help you talk yourself through it.

2. Reframe The Thought

Once you figure out where the negativity is coming from, try to reframe the thought. Think about it in a different light. Maybe your negative thoughts are problems that need solutions or questions that need answers.

3. Evaluate The Evidence

Ask yourself if your negative thoughts are truly valid. Are you worrying about something that realistically is never going to happen? If your concerns are indeed valid, sit down and find a solution. If your negative thinking stems from financial woes, it’s time to make a budget! Sometimes it helps to write your thoughts down on paper.

4. Practice Mindfulness

When you feel like negative thoughts are taking over, stop and breathe. Make a conscious effort not to let the negativity affect you. If you remain mindful of negative thoughts and are able to recognize them when they come about, you have a much better chance of pushing them out of your mind before they consume you.

5. Understand Your Power Over Negative Thinking

Don’t let negative thoughts overwhelm you. Remember that you are in charge of your own happiness. You have the power to choose positive thoughts over negative ones. When you feel the negativity creeping in, don’t allow yourself to get caught up in it. Take a deep breath and think about all of the positive things in your life!

6. Find Ways to De-stress

Negative thoughts often stem from stress. If your mind seems constantly filled with negativity, take it as a sign that you need a break. Clear your schedule, turn off your electronics and take some time for yourself. Clear your mind by taking a walk, exercising or reading a book. Spend some time in an environment that gives you peace.
