“The light has gone out of my life.” Those are the exact words former President Teddy Roosevelt wrote 133 years ago on Valentine’s Day, the day his wife died.

Alice Roosevelt was only 22 years old when she died in childbirth. This came just hours after the death of former President Roosevelt’s mother.

The letter is kept in an online collection of the Library of Congress. They store rare, interesting, or significant pieces of history and make them available for viewing online.

This entry, however, has got to be the saddest love story of all time.
