Conspiracy theorists are claiming that the woman appearing alongside President Trump recently was not his wife Melania Trump – but a body double wearing a “fake nose” and giant sunglasses.
“Melania” actually trended as topic on Twitter on Wednesday as people, even mainstream media writers, claimed that Melania Trump was a body double.
The conspiracy theorists used footage of Trump from last Friday when he spoke to the media about hurricane relief for Puerto Rico, as the First Lady wore large black sunglasses and stood behind her husband.
During the press conference, Trump mentioned the presence of his wife even though she was standing in clear view of the cameras.
“This is not Melania,” tweeted Joe Vargas. “To think they would go this far & try & make us think its her on TV is mind blowing. Makes me wonder what else is a lie.”
A Guardian columnist has taken credit for originating the fake news. On Thursday, Guardian columnist Marine Hyde wrote, “Finally, some fake news I can get behind. Indeed, I can’t help feeling it is fake news I am literally behind, having pointed out the top-level conspiracy last Friday evening, within seconds of NBC tweeting a video of Donald Trump being interviewed at a Secret Service training facility while Melania stood silently next to him. ‘Absolutely convinced Melania is being played by a Melania impersonator these days,’ my painstaking investigation read. ‘Theory: she left him weeks ago.’ Imagine my pride to find that by Thursday morning, this cobblers had percolated all the way up to news Valhalla – AKA sections on Good Morning Britain and Sky News – having been fanned by various nutjob social media accounts in the US. ”
