While women may more openly discuss the problem of dark under-eye circles, the truth is that it affects men as well. “Are you feeling OK?” or “Were you up late last night?” may be common questions from friends, family members or co-workers if you find yourself frequently waking up with dark circles. Many assume that lack of sleep is to blame, but dark circles can actually be inherited, and they have also been attributed to allergies and nasal congestion. These conditions can cause blood vessels around the eyes to dilate and darken.

Other triggers for dark under-eye circles include stress, anemia, eczema, crying, sleep deprivation, oversleeping, too much sodium, excessive drinking, smoking, sun exposure, mononucleosis and aging. In rare cases, dark circles could be indicative of a more serious problem, such as hyperthyroidism or liver disease.

Most of the time, dark circles aren’t that serious, and we just want something to cover them up. There are many cosmetic companies claiming to have a miracle cure, and some individuals just go the route of extra concealer and foundation to help dilute their appearance. But there is a more natural and effective way to eliminate dark circles using a simple home remedy, consisting of just baking soda and water!

Baking soda has been the source of many beauty hack tips. From using it as a dry shampoo or a nail cleaner to using it as a mask to help fight acne, it can easily work its way into your beauty routine. There are those who argue that baking soda should not be used on your face, as a mixture of baking soda and water is alkaline and could disrupt the skin barrier, causing skin to dry out or become irritated. As with anything, do your research, determine your skin type and make a decision that is best for you!
