Most of us could use a detox every once in a while. Everything from drinking alcohol and eating out to using beauty products and inhaling city smog can cause toxins to collect in your body. If you notice a puffy, dull and inflamed look to your skin, it’s a sign that you are in desperate need of a skin detox. Enter the jade roller.
The jade roller has been used in Chinese beauty regimens for centuries. In fact, the old-age tool dates as far back as the 7th century. Dr. Lamees Hamdan added jade rollers to her skin care line, Shiffa, after visiting China. “There were jade face rollers in the museum dating back centuries, so that got me very interested because I always thought of jade as being decorative and protective but not as a beauty tool,” she explained. She issued her own gold-accented version of the roller for her skin care line. The roller uses gentle pressure to help sweep toxins from the skin while balancing excess fluid in the tissue.
The centuries-old tool is certainly making a comeback. New York facialist Ling Chan uses the tool regularly on her clients, starting at the center of the neck then moving outward and upward along the planes of the face. She explained, “Just as exercise can tone your body, the jade roller can tone your face.”
The jade roller has the ability to clear fluid that causes puffiness by promoting lymphatic drainage, boost circulation in your skin, improve elasticity and promote cell turnover. The overall result is a brighter, healthier look.
So how exactly do you use the jade roller? It’s pretty simple:
- Apply your favorite serum or moisturizer.
- Roll the jade roller in an upward motion, working from your neck toward your forehead.
“Just a few minutes of massage is very anti-aging,” Chan said. “We overuse the muscles in our face – whether we bite our teeth or stare at the computer for too long. The roller can break through the blockage.”
To give the jade roller an added boost, place the stone in the refrigerator or on ice. The extra temperature drop will help drain congested lymph nodes and rid the body of toxins while stimulating collagen production and reducing inflammation.
