I am one of those people who cannot use fabric softener. It’s the truth. I tried once and 80% of my body broke out in hives. That was not a fun weekend!

So, as a person who is allergic to fabric softener, what am I supposed to do? Should I live with harsh, staticky clothes all my life? The answer is no, because there are natural options I can use that are not only better for me, but my washer as well!

Vinegar added to the rinse cycle of a wash will act like a fabric softener without all the harsh chemicals. On top of that, it will keep your clothes looking bright, help to remove stains, remove laundry soap residue, and neutralize nasty smells. Plus, it is safe for use with delicates.

Vinegar is also much better for you than commercial fabric softener. Most fabric softeners contain toxic chemicals that are not good for your skin, your body, the environment, and they create harmful indoor air pollution. Vinegar is the best bet and, if you want a bit of scent, add a drop or two of your favorite essential oil.

Ron Beres, from The Healthy Home Dream Team, shows you how to add vinegar to your rinse cycle. If you have a front loading washer, just put the vinegar in the softener slot. He also shows you how to use vinegar to clean your washing machine!
