Singer Sinead O’Connor recently posted a tearful video for the world to see, regarding her struggles with mental illness. While some may find the video difficult to watch, O’Connor’s message is important.
In the video, O’Connor is crying in a hotel room as she explains that her family has abandoned her because of her mental health issues. “People who suffer from mental illness are the most vulnerable people on Earth,” she said. “You’ve got to take care of us. We’re not like everybody.”
The 12-minute long video has nearly 900,000 views and 6,000 shares since it was posted on Facebook on August 3rd. The singer created the hashtag #OneOfMillions in hopes of opening a discussion about mental health.
“Not actually to me but the fact that I know that I’m only one of millions of millions of millions of people who are just like me actually who don’t have necessarily the resources that I have in my heart or my purse for that matter,” she said.
O’Connor went on to share that she is suicidal and she feels like she is being punished for having a mental illness. “Suddenly, all the people who are supposed to be loving you or taking care of you treat you like shit,” she said.
O’Connor’s Struggle With Mental Illness
This isn’t the first time the singer has posted about her struggles on social media. In 2015, she posted about overdosing during a custody battle involving her youngest son and his father. In 2016, O’Connor was reported missing in Chicago when she didn’t return home from a bike ride. She was found safe the next day.
O’Connor has been open about her mental health problems over the years. She previously said she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. After her video went viral, a follow-up Facebook post written on her behalf said that the singer was safe.
Celebrities and fans alike have expressed concern about O’Connor’s video. Fans urged O’Connor to get help and to take comfort in the face that she is not alone. Singer Annie Lenox wrote, “I realize that Sinead has some serious mental health issues, but she appears to be completely out on a limb and I’m concerned for her safety. Are there no close friends or family who could be with her to give her some loving support? It’s terrible to see her in such a vulnerable state.”
