If you’re a dog person, there’s nothing you love more than seeing your pup wag his tail. Whether he’s running around the yard, playing with his favorite chew toy or munching down on a bone, seeing him happy makes you happy. After all, a dog is a man’s best friend. There’s no question about it that our furry four-legged friends bring happiness into our lives. According to a recent study, there’s another way you can make your dog happy. This simple trick can even make your pooch happier than a new toy.
Researchers at the University of Glasgow in Scotland conducted a study to find out what type of music dogs prefer. They found that reggae and soft rock topped the canine charts! They also found that certain dogs seem to have different tastes when it comes to music.
PhD student Amy Bowman was part of the study. “We were keen to explore the effect playing different genres of music had, and it was clear that the physiological and behavioral changes observed were maintained during the trial when the dogs were exposed to a variety of music,” she said.
The experiment took place at SPCA in Dumbarton, Scotland. Researchers studies how dogs responded to different styles of music. Professor Neil Evans explained, “Overall, the response to different genres was mixed highlighting the possibility that like humans, our canine friends have their own individual music preferences.” He added, “That being said, reggae music and soft rock showed the highest positive changes in behavior.”
In 2015, the Scottish SPCA released another study showing that classical music had a calming effect on dogs. Colorado State University researchers found the same conclusions during a 2012 study. This study also found that heavy metal music heightened anxiety and unrest in canines.
