A horse named Sereno from Brazil appeared to get quite emotional at his owner’s funeral, making distressed sounds and even crying.
According to The Daily Mail, Sereno’s owner Wagner de Lima Figueiredo died tragically on New Year’s Day following a motorcycle accident. The two were reportedly very close.
“This horse was everything to Wagner,” said the deceased’s brother Wando. “Sometimes he would even stop buying things for himself to make sure he could afford to buy horse feed.”
What’s more, Wando said, Wagner received many offers from people looking to buy his prize-winning steed – but he always refused.
Sereno apparently didn’t take Wagner’s love for granted because, as many people attending the cowboy’s funeral attested, he seemed to have quite a tough time dealing with the loss.
“All the way to the cemetery he was whimpering and stomping on the ground,” said Wando.
Family friend Francielio Limiera said, “it was an unbelievable thing to see the way the horse behaved. If I hadn’t been there I wouldn’t have believed it myself.”
Sereno reportedly even went right up to his owner’s casket.
This story has gained widespread attention from animal lovers online.
“Animals are the most trusted allies a man can possess,” wrote Facebook user Abdul Haziz.
“Horses are smart,” wrote Alan Bond. “If they had that special connection between human and animal I can believe it.”
“I’m not surprised,” stated Maree Kat Wray. “Past experience has made it very clear to me that horses have as much feeling for their owners as do owners for their horse. So sad.”
