You might recognize fluoride as the substance many believe improves dental health. But what’s the pineal gland? The pineal gland is an endocrine gland found in vertebrates that is the source of: melatonin, a hormone that plays a central role in the regulation of circadian rhythm and dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a neurotransmitter implicated in causing dreaming.
How Does it Work?
The pineal gland is located in the brain, between the two cerebral hemispheres. It contains a rich supply of adrenergic nerves that greatly influence its function. Melatonin (a hormone that helps control your sleep and wake cycles), serotonin (a chemical that helps relay signals from one area of the brain to another), and dimethyltryptamine (DMT) are all believed to be synthesized in the pineal gland. Circulating melatonin levels inform the brain about light-dark cycles which allows normal sleep activity and reproductive cycles. Serotonin makes our brains and bodies feel content and happy. DMT is involved in causing dreaming and may play a key role in helping us understand the chemistry of birth and birthing, as well as near-death experiences.
How Does Fluoride Affect the Pineal Gland?
Up until the 1990’s no research was ever conducted to determine the effect of fluoride on the pineal gland, until a British scientist buy the name of Jennifer Luke discovered that fluoride accumulates to strikingly high levels in the pineal gland. It turns out that it’s a major target for fluoride accumulation, because it is exposed to a high volume of blood flow.
Constant exposure to fluoride (often from drinking water that contains fluoride) leads to pineal gland calcification — a buildup of calcium phosphate crystals which can cause damage to the body by causing cardiovascular blockages and arthritic inflammation amongst other conditions. The calcified parts of the pineal gland actually contain the highest levels of fluoride in the human body – even more than the bones and teeth!
What Are the Risks?
A 450-page review conducted by the National Research Council of the National Academies of Science found that the safe drinking water standard for fluoride (4 ppm) causes significant damage to teeth, and elevates risk of bone damage including bone fracture and joint pain.
The National Research Council has stated, “Fluoride is likely to cause decreased melatonin production and have other effects on normal pineal function, which in turn could contribute to a variety of effects in humans.” The Council also identified a range of health effects that may be associated with fluoride exposure, including damage to the brain, disruption of the endocrine system (thyroid gland, pineal gland and glucose metabolism) and even bone cancer.
Fluoride and Early Puberty
Children in the United States are going through puberty at earlier ages than in the past, and there are multiple health risks associated with early puberty. Some evidence indicates that fluoride’s effect on the pineal gland could be a contributing cause of early puberty. In her findings, Jennifer Luke discovered that fluoride exposure is linked to a decrease in the amount of melatonin circulation, which may cause accelerated sexual maturation in females.
How to Detoxify the Pineal Gland
If you want to detox your pineal gland to get rid of possible fluoride buildup, the most important step is to stop drinking water that contains fluoride, which is most often tap water and start drinking pure water. Another step you can take is to transition to fluoride-free dental products. Pineal expert David Wilcock has stated that melanin from certain wild medicinal mushrooms (e.g. chaga mushroom, reishi mushroom) are the best for nourishing the pineal gland. David Wolfe recommends an overall pineal cleanse and de-calcification program in his book Longevity Now. In his book, Wolfe recommends against taking calcium supplements (recommending magnesium and silica for bones instead). Wolfe recommends adding certain classes of foods and supplements including bad calcium dissolvers (MegaHydrate, MSM, citric acid, apple cider vinegar, fulvic acid, and/or shilajit) as well as immune system foods/herbs including: medicinal mushrooms and aged garlic.
