Monsanto is the third most hated company in the entire world. They are the only agricultural/food company on the entire ‘worst 10’ list, which is comprised mainly of shady financial institutions and oil companies like BP.
So yeah, the world really hates Monsanto. It’s not hard to see why.
Monsanto’s very first creation was an artificial, cancer-causing sweetener they ultimately sold to Coca-Cola. That was just the beginning. They later created PCBs. Their modern chemicals are threatening the bee population. They also poison civilians regularly.
Of course, Monsanto knows all about their negative public image. That’s why you’ll just about never find the company’s logo displayed on their products. Heck, even their trademark ‘Roundup’ weedkiller is devoid of visible public branding.
This secrecy makes shopping quite difficult for people looking to stay away from Monsanto. Luckily, I’m about to give you the ultimate list of Monsanto-owned food companies.
Now, some of these brands may produce food that does not contain GMOs. However, sites like True Activist are recommending a boycott of all the company’s products. This is to make a point – that we’re fed up with Monsanto’s corruption.
Besides, considering Monsanto’s lack of regard for human health, I don’t think it would hurt to stay away. In case you need some nudging, let’s run through a couple of Monsanto’s past and present health blunders.
#1 – Giving Unsuspecting People Cancer
In the late 90s, coffee farmer Christine Sheppard started using Monsanto’s ‘Roundup’ pesticide, thinking it was safe. Then, in 2003, doctors diagnosed her with lymphoma. Researchers subsequently found that – oops; the weed killer tons of farmers had been breathing in for several years? Not as safe as the company had insisted.
Christine later sued them and won. She’s just one drop in a wave of farmers who have filed lawsuits against the agricultural giant.
In one Argentinian study, researchers found that farming villages who used Roundup regularly have cancer rates as high as four times the national average.
#2 – Causing Global Birth Defects
You know that whole microcephaly scare? The one most media outlets are attributing to Zika? Some experts have actually linked it to Monsanto’s chemicals.
But even if we give them the benefit of the doubt on that one, the truth of the matter is that their products cause an abysmal amount of birth defects worldwide. According to an Argentinean study, genetically modified soy could be to blame for brain, intestinal and heart defects in fetuses.
“The companies say that drinking a glass of glyphosate [the active ingredient in Roundup] is healthier than drinking a glass of milk, but the fact is that they’ve used us as guinea pigs,” says study author Andres Carrasco.
