A commercial from Atlanta-based pet shelter Furkids has taken the internet by storm, reportedly prompting a drastic surge in donations.
According to CNBC, Furkids is the largest no-kill pet shelter in the southeast.
In December of 2016, the nonprofit published a very low-budget commercial that featured a hilarious improvised performance from one Paul Preston – the brother of a Furkids volunteer.
In the commercial, Preston dons what Global News calls a “used car salesman-esque character.”
“Do you like black cats?” he says in the clip. “We got the blackest cats you’ve ever seen. It’s like midnight inside a coffin over here.”
Since its posting, the commercial – dubbed the ‘Kitty Kommercial’ has amassed more than 4 million views on YouTube.
“This thing has taken off and it’s just so heartwarming,” said CEO Samantha Shelton to Global News. “It’s hard to express the excitement we all feel – all of us that are involved with Furkids.”
According to CNBC, Shelton also said Furkids has raised over $13,000 between donations and merchandise sales since posting the commercial.
“We have received 80 percent more donations of items on our Amazon wish list this week than we normally would receive,” said Shelton.
The CEO also reportedly expects a sharp increase in adoption requests.
“We’re grateful for Paul Preston’s humorous approach to adoption,” she said. “His piece has resonated powerfully and made us recognize that humor touches and motivates people.”
“We at Furkids hope that our video inspires people around the world to adopt homeless cats and dogs and support their own local shelters.”
