While Google claims to be fighting a war against fake news, it’s becoming increasingly clear that their definition of “fake” is anything that opposes their corporate interests.
Case in point: numerous anti-establishment websites are alleging that traffic to their pages have plummeted in concert with a recent change to Google’s algorithms.
The algorithms claimed to fight against so-called “fake news”, but in reality they’ve only helped suppress the most hard-hitting anti-establishment news/journalism websites in the world—including WikiLeaks, The Intercept, the ACLU, Common Dreams, Antiwar.com, and others.
According to World Socialist Web Site, which claims to be authentically committed to opposing elitist institutions, it’s seen its traffic drop by 70% during the same month that Google’s anti-fake news program was implemented.
A visual representation of WSWS’s traffic decrease:
Other drops in monthly page visits include WikiLeaks by 30% and Democracy Now by 36%.
Claiming to combat “conspiracy theories”, “fake news”, and “low quality” information, the Google algorithm has essentially demonized and ostracized any ideas that pose a threat to the status quo—-you know, like WikiLeaks publications exposing America’s war crimes in Iraq—-but apparently, covering up collateral damage is now “liberal.”
As long as your company logo is full of happy bright colors, it must be trustworthy and ethical, right?

As WSWS puts it:
“While a significant percentage of our readers enter the WSWS directly, many web users access the site through search engines, of which Google is the most widely used.
“There is no innocent explanation for the extraordinarily sharp fall in readers, virtually overnight, coming from Google searches.
“Google’s claim that it is protecting readers from ‘fake news’ is a politically motivated lie.
“Google, a massive monopoly, with the closest ties to the state and intelligence agencies, is blocking access to the WSWS and other left and progressive web sites through a system of rigged searches.”
Additional Left-Wing Sites See Plummets in Traffic:
Indeed, and it’s not just left-wing websites seeing censorship.
Conservative sites like Breitbart have accused both Google and Facebook of indirectly censoring them through algorithm changes.
Gizmodo reported on how Facebook’s recent efforts to combat fake news ended up disproportionately impacting right-wing sites.
After nearly a year of hearing Google, Facebook, and the mainstream media express faux outrage over “fake news”, it’s become quite clear that they were only projecting their own fears about their fake news being exposed.
