How do you think your personality came about? Do you think you were born with a certain personality? Or have your experiences shaped the person you are? However your personality develops, it’s easy to see different likes and dislikes, talents, tendencies and opinions in the people around you. Your friends, family members and co-workers, even the people you meet briefly each have their own unique personality.

There are over 7 billion people in the world. Does that mean there are over 7 billion different personalities? Psychologists don’t think so.

There’s an argument to be made about how many different types of personalities truly exist. While the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is based off of 16 personality types, psychologist Goldon Allport’s list contains 4,000 different types. Still, many psychologists believe there are truly only five basic dimensions of personality.

The five personality traits in the “big five” theory are extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness and neuroticism. While every personality varies, these five traits are believed to represent the building blocks of personality, between a range of two extremes. One on end lies the extroversion personality. The extrovert will go out of their way to meet new people and have new experiences. On the other end lies neuroticism. Someone with a neurotic personality tends to experience anxiety and shy away from new things.
