“Love is when you sit beside someone, doing nothing, yet you feel perfectly happy.”

Have you heard this quote before? It might stir up some warm and fuzzy feelings and make you daydream about your significant other, but it turns out that it might actually go deeper.

According to Sufi philosophy, sitting next to your friend or loved one is actually one of the prerequisites of happiness. Whether you’re looking at each other, engaged in a conversation, or simply sitting and staring at the sunset or watching a movie, being with someone you feel comfortable with can cause you to feel at peace — a happiness that radiates from the inside. There’s no awkward silence or need to fill space with sound. Sitting next to a loved one is enough to make you feel content.

According to Pathway to Happiness,

“There is one step to creating happiness. It is to express love. When you express the emotion of love you create happiness and joy within yourself. Happiness is not just a state of mind. Happiness is also a state of emotion.”
