… If that doesn’t sound like something straight out of a horror film, I don’t know what does. And yet, a while back, this very story landed on the front page of CNN’s website.

If you’ve ever felt like the food you’re eating has been getting inside your head, it could be because it contains parasites that do just that – moving through your eyes, tissues and, commonly, your brain.

In 2013, the first case of this popped up in the UK when a British man was found to have a tapeworm wriggling through his brain. Dr. Effrossyni Gkrania-Klotsas told CNN the worm had moved from one side of the man’s brain to the other, something very few species of parasite seem to do.

This GIF shows a tapeworm squirming through the man’s brain.

One species, known as Spirometra Erinaceieuropaei, is common to parts of the world like South Korea, Japan, Thailand and China, the latter of which was where the British man had recently visited.

The infection caused by Spirometra Erinaceieuropaei is known as sparganosis and often originates in cats and dogs, where the worm can grow to a terrifying length of 1.5 metres. Put simply, it’s not the sort of thing you’d want to meet in a dark alley on a Friday night.

A smaller – but still terrifying – example of the parasite.

A smaller – but still terrifying – example of the parasite.

Considering that we don’t (most of us anyway) eat cats and dogs, this parasite wouldn’t be a problem if it only existed in those animals. But sadly, there is another animal that harbors these worms, one the human digestive system is all too familiar with – pigs.

Pork can become infected with tapeworms in a few different ways. The Albertan Agriculture and Forestry Department put together the following helpful diagram detailing the icky process:

While this diagram highlights the infection process of tapeworms through pigs, only three types of tapeworms can infect a human brain. This occurs when they infiltrate the nervous system.

The results can be pretty horrible.

Yup.

This particular image shows the effects of the Taenia Solium, which, like the Spirometra Erinaceieuropaei, inhabits the muscles of pigs.

And just how many people worldwide have been severely affected by tapeworm infiltration of the brain? Dr. Theodore Nash puts the number conservatively at 5 million globally.

That’s not exactly surprising when you consider the diabolical conditions with which pigs are farmed.

I eat meat. But the one meat I’m always a bit hesitant to touch is pork. And after seeing this, I think the bacon chilli cheese poutine sold at my school will be on the backburner for a while.

Does this pertain to cooked meat as well? Not that I ever eat pork but my husband had some the other night but cooked it well done.

  • Annie

My mom always cooked pork well done, never ever rare to medium where I’ve seen it done on some cooking shows. And know where your pork is coming from, buy locally if possible.

  • Anne

Pork is one of the meats that ALWAYS needs to be cooked well and thoroughly. The worms have always been there, this is not new. I love pork and have eaten it for over 60 years. Steak? I love that blue.

  • Lilly

This is a little misleading as tape worms happen anywhere, it’s just as likely to end up in your leg, or anywhere else in your body.

  • s taro

So eat it but cook it well? Doesn’t that mean you are eating cooked worms????

  • ALilWacked

Pork can and never should be eaten raw. Didn’t know cooked worms could infect your brain. While this may in rare cases be an issue for those handling the live animal, I see no problem as a consumer.

  • Tracy

The only ‘pork’ I eat is bacon very sparingly. That I would have thought is so processed, no live worms could be left surely? I have heard of Trichinosis….. put me off pork years ago.

  • kregan

I wish they didn’t use profanity use in this video. It really distracts from the point and some people won’t share the link with their christian friends because of it. Just sayin’

  • yasir ali

just for the knowledge for some that muslims dont eat pork because its forbidden in islam…..

    • Kristine Bodnaruk

there rules for that but not for molesting small children and many other thing s i won’t say

      • yasir ali

r u kidding me?? and whats the source of your information, because i havent seen anything in islamic teachings which even remotely dont relate to allowing molesting of children

        • Kristine Bodnaruk

forcing marriage on young girls example 7 and up to men that are 3-4 times their age and having intercourse with them we refer to that as child abuse and molesting and what ever they feel like doing to them this is sick behaviour

          • yasir ali

1st of all marriage does not take place without the consent of the girls, and 2nd, the minimum age of marriage is age of puberty, and how on earth it becomes child abuse and molesting because “you” think its so. people around the world have different faiths and religions and customs which you should start respecting. when each country is free to set their own laws regarding minimum age of marriage, then why cant we act upon a law which god has made for us.

          • Kristine Bodnaruk

well first of all i don’t believe women or girls have any rights and i have heard some horrifying things that take place in your countries and i don’t want to see this behaviour ever to take place here in canada and you and your people should respect the laws in the other countries and especially canada and mow come to our countries and attempt to force your sick behaviour on these countries just look at germany and france thats a nightmare

          • yasir ali

Sorry for late reply. I was busy in exams.
Well, you dont have to beleive what others say. You might spare some time to see what actually is happening in the world. I dont deny violence against women. But it has nothing to do with islam and to women specially. It belongs to humans old habit of suppressing the weak and bowing against powerfull. So yes some men dont treat their women humanely, all the same powerfull and rich do injustice with poor and weak. If women are thrown acids on their faces and beaten, men too are killed barbarically and are forced to do labour for very small wages.
2nd, if you talk about violence, then why dont you take a look at top countries with most rape cases. Does the rape dont count under the definition of violence. Who sends their old parents to old homes when they are most vulnerable. Who sends their fighter jets and troops to massacre the entire cities. Who interferes in other countries affairs and overthrow their democratically chosen governments.
ISIS is terrorist organization. But would you please compare brutalities and masscres they have done with what west has been doing since centuries with muslims. its not even 100 to 1.

Obviously a heart felt response…but these are the sorts of issues one runs into often these days because there is and has been an on-going ‘cottage industry’ in certain communities in North America to instill hatred and fear of “the other” especially in the places where US military has been bombing without purpose for years. There is much rumor mongering and fear being instilled and I suppose for some it is easier to swallow that whole without trying to find Truth on their own than to acknowledge that we’ve “been here before”…whether during slavery or even during WW2 when Japanese Americans (never German or Italian Americans) were dispossessed of their businesses and homes in California and shipped off to unpleasant concentration camps in the Western US until the end WW2. We darn well will not repeat these shameful discriminatory offenses again since most sane and rational adults will not allow such abuse to be repeated. thank you for your honest response….hope your exams go well…!

The “consent” of the girls!! How convenient that God “made” preteen girls so… agreeable.

  • afftongrown

Just more fear mongering to prevent people from eating pork. There appears to be more and more of this type of reporting lately…..creeping sharia?

    • Mary

You didn’t find that video disturbing? How is this fear mongering? It didn’t disturb you that they cut the pigs and let them bleed to death, convulsing in pain? How could this not bother you? This is not fear mongering ,it is showing what happens on factory farms and yes, there SHOULD be more undercover work done to expose these heathens for what they are. If you were not disturbed by this then there must be something wrong with you. How could anybody want an animal to suffer like that?

  • artemis133

Haven’t eaten pork or beef for many years. It’s horrible to make your body a graveyard for animals.

  • Wolf Roth

German Doctors Magazine talks about 1,400 cases worldwide with most of them reported in China due to cat and dog meal in local areas. Raw meat can always cause problems, that’s why we have implemented monitoring procedures in meat production in Europe and the USA.

  • marc

Disgusting way to treat animals . Only bastards and cowards can do such things

  • I’m glad I don’t eat meat. YUK!!

    • Roger Crigger

I do eat meat, but not meat raised like this! Factories like this are immoral, and make me sad that I belong to the human race … Animals, ALL animals, (but especially pigs), are thinking, reasoning, uniquely individual with their own personalities and …FEELINGS, including FEAR!

This breaks my heart. I was raised on a farm, and our animals were treated with dignity, to the point where they bred, raised their own young, had huge fields to run in, I would even dare say, they enjoyed their lives … but THIS … THIS is the kind of thing that we as the human race will be held accountable for! Even the most ruthless of predators in the animal kingdom would not treat their prey with such arrogant indifference!

Shame on us! Lord, please forgive us, and CLOSE THESE PLACES DOWN! Let us learn a bit of humbleness, maybe let us big, fat, spoiled, heartless Americans know what it is to ….BE HUNGRY!!!!

      • Martha Gruber Arntson

I so agree with you Roger! I only buy meat from a local farm, they actually post videos and pictures of their animals. I found them at our local Farmer’s Market here, I’m sure most places have Farmer’s Markets where the locals come to sell their goods? I haven’t bought meat in a store for over 2 years since starting with Pastimes Farm, where I know where the meat comes from, how the animals are raised and slaughtered. It’s just a matter of time and people like us coming together and really pushing for the end to factory farming!

  • Roger Crigger

I eat meat, but not meat raised like this! Factories like this are immoral, and make me sad that I belong to the human race. We, (especially Americans) have become so fricken entitled at any and all cost. So lazy and indifferent to the reality of just what it takes to stock the shelves of 50,000 Wal-Marts every day, just so we won’t have to be inconvenienced!

… Animals, ALL animals, (but especially pigs), are thinking, reasoning, uniquely individual with their own personalities and …FEELINGS! Feelings including FEAR, and confusion, and sorrow… Yeah, I’ve watched loving sows, (that’s a mother pig), nurture and care for her new born, squealing little piglets, with love, contentment and happiness… and evidently a much more selfless thought process than many of the self entitled brats in this comment string! This video had nothing to do with “cooking the meat thoroughly” or “getting worms from pork” … This video had to do with the way we indiscriminately, and with total arrogant disregard have no problem torturing and tormenting an animal that is second on the list of INTELLIGENCE, and after reading some of these comments, I’d have to place them FIRST on that list!

I am a vegetarian but my mom forced me to eat meat (she loved pork… a yuk for me) when I was young… I always had inexplicable headaches… so… now the question is… how do you get rid of these beasts if you have them inside you?????

  • God knows best when he told us which foods to not eat! see Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14
