Honey is an incredibly valuable medicinal tool that can be used for a variety of ailments. When you think of honey, what do you think of? Honey Nut Cheerios? Or maybe a way to sweeten your tea? It is much more than a sweetener, and when it is a high-quality honey, you can benefit from it therapeutically.

When buying honey, you want to make sure to buy local raw honey. The absolute best place to buy quality honey from my experience is at the farmers’ market. You can talk to the beekeeper, learn about honey and where the bees and honey are made. This gives you much insight into the product you consume.

You’ll also find that at the farmers’ market you can get all types of honey that you will not be able to find at your local grocery store. I have wildflower honey, raspberry honey, cherry honey, buckwheat honey and several other varieties of honey. Each tastes different and delicious in its own way, and each has it’s own therapeutic benefits.

If you buy any honey from the grocery store, it is most likely (a 99% chance) to have been pasteurized and filtered and may even contain some additional ingredients that hinder quality in order to increase shelf life.

Store honey does not have as many live enzymes and other therapeutic and medicinal nutrients in it as raw honey bought from your local farmers market. As with any food that you eat, quality always comes first. Get quality honey from the farmers’ market and ask questions!

With that being said, there are five medicinal uses for honey that can benefit your body. If you use honey instead of over-the-counter drugs, you can take advantage of the nutrients in honey and skip the negative side effects of man-made medicine.

Did you know that raw, unfiltered honey contains up to 80 beneficial compounds for humans? Everything from antioxidants, vitamins, amino acids, fiber, trace elements, minerals to enzymes and so much more. Raw, unfiltered honey contains a wide array of beneficial nutrients that support health and longevity.

Here are 5 Ways To Use Honey Medicinally:

Sore Throat? Try Honey

If you have a sore throat, you can simply mix 1 tablespoon of organic lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of honey into a glass of lukewarm water. Mix it well and drink. Warm up the water in a pot or kettle and then add it to the honey and lemon juice in your cup; stir well and drink. The vitamin C from the lemon and medicinal compounds in honey help to ease a sore throat. (Source)

Have a Cold? Try Honey

Whenever I see someone with the cold taking an over-the-counter pill, I think to myself “I wish they knew!” I wish they knew what natural medicine can do. Honey is an amazing way to heal from a cold quickly and effectively to ensure it doesn’t come back again. Simply mix 1 tablespoon of organic fresh squeezed lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of raw honey into a cup of ginger tea that you brew over the stove. Mix well and drink up! (Source)

Honey As A Detoxifying Agent

The world we live in is full of chemicals and pollutants. Because of this we need to support our bodies’ natural detoxification pathways. In order to do this, we need to support it nutritionally. You can do this by adding two tablespoons of raw honey in with a dandelion root herbal tea over the stove. As a general rule of all the mixtures above, add the lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, ginger tea or dandelion root herbal tea in it’s own cup of hot water, and then add the honey after the hot tea cools down a bit. You want to add the honey in last because adding honey into the steaming pot will kill beneficial enzymes. By adding the honey last when the liquid has cooled down a bit but is still warm, you can get more therapeutic value from the honey. (Source)
